The second I pulled the curtains I was shocked.
The weather has suddenly completely transformed during the night and there was at least 10-15 cm of snow everywhere.
I stared at the whiteness around my window and blinked a couple of extra times in order to be completely sure it wasn’t just a bad dream.
When I opened the window to take a better look I was greeted with a strong ice-cold wind accompanied with hundreds of little snowflakes bursting through my room.
I quickly closed the window while shouting all sorts of curses silently inside my head.
All my current workout plans were ruined and I didn’t know what to do.
I’ve tried many times to do calisthenics outside in bad weather and my last attempt nearly got me ill.
After I got home my fingers were so frozen that I literally felt pain when I tried to heat them up on the little electrical heater I use in my room.
This time I was determined that I wouldn’t repeat the same mistake no matter what.
I had to find a working solution.
And I had to find it FAST…

Where Is The Best Place To Do Calisthenics?
After I had wasted enough time cursing the bad weather, I walked back and sit on my bed with a thud.
What the hell I’m going to do? Think Bozhidar, think.
The most obvious thing I could do was to work out in my room because of the bad weather.
But there was a huge problem. Today I had to train my back and explosive power.
And in order to do so, I really needed access to a pull-up bar which at that point I still haven’t bought.
Yes, I know… I can really be so stupid sometimes. I’ve had many different occasions to buy a bar but I was too cheap to spend money…
So no bar – no workout.
After checking all my options I finally saw that I had no other choice but to go outside in the snow to the nearest pull-up bar and complete my workout.
Somehow I survived.
With the help of some miracle, I still managed to do a decent workout without losing my fingers to frostbite.
The moral of the story is this:
I don’t believe there is such a thing as a “best place” to do calisthenics.
The place you choose to do it is going to rely on your current condition, situation, weather, and available time and equipment.
That’s why my “best place to do calisthenics” might be different than yours.
If the weather is sunny and cloudless you are probably going to go outside.
If there is a huge thunderstorm you would prefer to train indoors.
If you paying for a monthly gym membership you are most likely to go there if time allows.
But even if the places might be different there are still 2 extremely important things you can actually do that are going to prepare you for any occasion …
What You Need To Get The Maximum Out Of Your Workouts
Do you remember what were the 2 most important things I was missing inside my story?
Take a few seconds and think.
I’ll help you out. They were a pull-up bar and creative back exercises I could do at home.
If I was prepared and had those 2 things I wouldn’t have to go out in the middle of the winter and freeze myself in order to do a couple of pull-ups.
So in order for you to get the maximum out of every single workout you do, you must have those 2 things:
- Solid workout program
- Basic and important equipment
I hope it does because you are doing a huge mistake if you are not currently doing them.
1. Solid workout program
This is probably the most important and vital thing you must-have if you want to see real results.
Sadly this wasn’t my case. I didn’t believe in progressive workout programs for a pretty long time.
And that was the main reason why I’ve wasted many months doing all sorts of things without achieving anything.
My workouts were a complete waste of time. Yep, everything was a total disaster.
So please don’t be like me!
If I had to recommend only one calisthenics workout program it is going to be the Bar Brothers The System.
Because this program literally saved me. Yes, I’m not exaggerating at all.
After being stuck with no significant progress for many months I slowly started to feel hopeless.

The second biggest mistake you can make is not to be prepared.
If I had bought a pull-up bar I wouldn’t have to go outside in the cold.
Sometimes the biggest solutions to our problems are the simplest ones.
That’s why my second advice is going to be this:
Be highly equipped and prepared for any situation that may happen.
“It’s better to be safe than sorry, right?”
With calisthenics, there are usually 2 types of equipment you can buy – portable and stationary.
Let’s see what is the best option for you!
Where you are going to need portable calisthenics equipment?
Because this type of training equipment is compact, lightweight and easy to use it would make the biggest sense to buy it if you are going to mainly work out outside.
And because you are going to do outdoor calisthenics you don’t want to carry around a 30 lbs backpack.
That’s why it’s extremely important to only pick things that are light and designed to be carried around.
Here are a couple of things that match this description:
- Resistance bands
- Gymnastic rings
- Portable parallettes
- Weighted vest
- And even things like workout gloves and chalk
As you can see all of those things are relatively light and don’t need a lot of space.
You can easily put them inside a decently sized backpack and carry them with you wherever you go.
That is exactly why they are the ideal things you want to own if you are a big fan of outdoor calisthenics.
With that out of the way let’s find out a couple of great things you can buy if you want to build a solid calisthenics gym in your home…
Where you are going to need stationary calisthenics equipment?
As I have already mentioned this type of equipment is going to be most useful in your home or garage.
Because of the size and weight, this type of equipment isn’t designed to be carried around making it perfect for a home calisthenics gym.
This type of equipment can really help you take your body to the next level.

Trust me, these 3 bad boys are enough to transform your old boring living room into a nice and completely functional home gym.
But if you want even more hear me out.
The smartest thing you can do is to own both stationary and portable calisthenics equipment at the same time.
Isn’t that expensive? Why do I need so much stuff?
Because owning a piece of equipment from both categories is going to make sure you are prepared for any possible situation.
That way you are also going to have the complete freedom to train anywhere at any time without having to worry about stupid things.
Unfortunately, even the best workout plan and equipment is going to be completely useless if you don’t know how to use it…

Top 5 Places Where You Can Do Calisthenics
As a person who has done calisthenics anywhere you can think of, I highly recommend you to keep reading because I will share with you some very useful tips you can use straight away.
Let’s see what are the most common places do to calisthenics and which place is going to be the best place for you.

1. Doing Calisthenics At home
We all know that our own home is one of the safest and most comfortable places we can be.
That makes it an excellent place to do calisthenics.
If you have enough space you can easily transform almost every room into a private gym.
This is my favorite place to work out because I can listen to any song I want, pass gas without being afraid that someone may hear me or even workout with only my underwear. (it happened only once)
You can do all sorts of creepy stuff and nobody will ever know. You’ve got all the freedom in the world inside the space you call your home.
Why you should do calisthenics at home?
The real question should be:
Why you shouldn’t do calisthenics at home?
Because it’s hard for me to find solid reasons why not to.
For starters, you are all alone so no creepy staring dudes or roid rage. No strange smells, sweaty equipment or cringy songs you have to listen.
Trust me, your home is like heaven compared to the traditional gym.
And let’s not forget the fact that you are completely safe from any bad weather or lack of light.
It could be raining, snowing, windy, foggy or even pitch dark and you still can smack a good workout.
Probably one of my favorite things about working out at home is the fact that you don’t have to get out.
No more walking 10 minutes in the deep snow only to reach out to the nearest pull-up bar.
Especially if the weather sucks.
That’s why working out at home is something you should not avoid.
What are you going to need?
When I first started doing basic bodyweight exercises I had absolutely nothing and I was doing fairly well.
But as I slowly become bigger and stronger I needed to add some variety and additional resistance.
That’s when buying a couple of things become really handy.
But before I continue any further I want to let you know that buying additional equipment isn’t really necessary.
Especially if you are just starting out or don’t have any money available.
But if you want to buy a couple of useful things I would recommend you to start with a nice and solid pull-up bar.
My favorite type of bars is the ones that you can attach to your wall.
I’m currently using this pull up bar for about 2 years and it’s rock solid.

In my opinion, buying a pull-up bar is one of the best things you can do many different exercises targeting your whole upper body.
There are at least 20 I can think about right at this moment. Insane right?
If you have the budget go for it.
The next thing I recommend you get (after you have the bar) is a nice pair of portable dip bars.
Calisthenics dip bars are extremely multifunctional and can provide you with a ton of different exercises as well.

Some models are so light that you can easily take them with you outdoors if the weather is good.
The final piece of equipment I believe you might need for your home workouts are some types of parallettes.
I really like to use parallettes because they are shorter than dip bars and are extremely portable.
You can take easily slide them under the bed or take them with you for a nice outdoor workout.
If you want to check some good model I would suggest you see those. They are perfect for a beginner.
Biggest drawbacks of home workouts
Even if doing calisthenics in my own home is my favorite thing to do there are still a couple of things I don’t like.
The first and most obvious thing is that you are still enclosed by 4 walls. Because I’m an outdoor type of person, I really hate to stay at home sometimes.
Especially when the weather outside is good.
A few more things I don’t like are the fact that you are somewhat limited to space, height and it’s a lot harder to get company which sometimes may be very useful.
2. Doing Calisthenics at a Near Park/Forest
This is my favorite way to train when the weather is good.
There isn’t anything better than doing a couple of pull-ups and push-ups while the sunlight is shining and the light breeze is helping you fight the heat.
If you have access to this type of area around where you live consider yourself lucky because this is one of the best things you can do.
Why you should do calisthenics at a near park?
Because there isn’t anything more relaxing than being in nature.
With the help of some resistance bands, pull-up bar, and your weight you can achieve amazing workouts while you are enjoying the outdoor life.
And what a better reason to call a couple of buddies and do a nice workout together and hang out after that. Your possibilities are endless.
For example one of my favorite things I absolutely LOVE doing is to ride a bike.
But here’s the trick…
When I go out to ride my bike I usually take with me a bunch of my resistance bands in my backpack.
After I’ve done my ride I go to a nearby pull-up bar and do a short and intensive workout from the Bar Brother The System program.
That way I kill 2 birds with 1 stone:
I’ve done my cardio and finished an epic muscle-building session.
What are you going to need?
As I have already mentioned one of the best things you can get is a nice set of resistance bands.
Here are the ones I use almost every day:
You can’t believe how many things you can do only with the help of a few bands. They are one of the most multi-functional piece of equipment I have ever had.

After you get some bands the next things you should aim to get are some solid wooden gymnastic rings.
Because gymnastic rings are one of the best options to target your whole upper body without the need for a pull-up bar.
You can also attach them to any solid structure or even a tree branch.

But before you do so don’t forget to make sure it can hold your weight!
You don’t want it to snap leaving you crashing down on your face, right?

Biggest drawbacks of park workouts
One word – weather.
This is the one thing I hate most about working out outside.
One of my worst memories is that one time that it suddenly started pouring in the middle of my workout… If wasn’t cool.
Or simply another time when it became too dark and I couldn’t see a thing because my phone’s battery has died.
But let’s not forget the cold.
Have you ever tried to hang for 1 minute with bare hands on a steel pull-up bar during below zero temperatures?
If you haven’t don’t do it! Trust me it’s not worth it!
And by all means, use gloves. They are created for a reason…
3. Doing Calisthenics At a Street Workout Playground
Ah, this one is my favorite one when we are more than 3 people.
One of the best things you can do is to create a friendly calisthenics competition and see who is the strongest.
Sadly street workout playgrounds are not very widespread in many different counties. Especially when it comes to remote places or small towns and villages.
If you don’t have such a playground in your local area don’t worry because you still have 4 other options.
Why you should do calisthenics in a street workout playground?
Because you have everything available for free.
A good street workout playground is like a regular gym but without walls, bad music, and monthly subscription.
Most models come with many different pull-up bars, metal gymnastic rings, all sorts of different dip stations, jump boxes and even a gymnastic ladder.
As you can see with this option give you a huge variety of things you can do and everything is 24/7 at your disposal for no cost.
What are you going to need?
Because you already have access to almost everything you won’t need to spend a lot of money.
But there are still 2 things I recommend you to have:
- A weighted vest
- Workout gloves
Here’s why they are important.
Let’s start with the vest.
Owning a weighted vest is an excellent and easy way to keep improving your strength and muscle mass.
But even so, I don’t believe it is for beginners.
I bought my own vest when I had built the strength to do 50 push-ups, 25 dips, and 15 pull-ups.
But hey, if you have the budget it’s still a good long-term purchase.

“Ok, I see the logic behind the weighted vest but why should I care about gloves? After all, I’ve heard that wearing them makes you look weak!”
First of all, they are far from being useless and secondly why the fu*k would you care about what other people think.
You don’t wear workout gloves to win a competition. You wear them because you don’t want to get your palm punctured by pieces of glass, sharp edges and little annoying rocks.
Oh man, the rocks are my favorites.
And let’s not forget the sweaty metal bars and cold icy winds.

I really hate where the place is overcrowded and you have to wait to have access to the dip bars.
But what sucks even more, is the noise.
Are you familiar with the sound of 20 little kids running around and screaming?
Yep, it’s not cool.
Or the time where there’s some type of public concert nearby. Yikes!
And please let’s not forget all the douchebags that are there not for doing any productive workouts but simply to show their abs in order to get noticed by a hungry female.
Sadly the only food they get is other males. Lol!
4. Doing Calisthenics Inside a Local Gym
Well, this isn’t my favorite place to do calisthenics but because some of you are already paying for it I’ve decided to include it.
Look, it’s not that bad because you have access to a huge variety of machines and equipment at your disposal.
Going to the gym is like being a kid and going to the first time in Disneyland.
Why you should do calisthenics inside a local gym
The best reason is the fact that this is the absolute best place to go if you want to combine calisthenics with regular weight training.
“But Bozhidar, It costs money…”
Yes, I know it costs money but if you can afford it what’s the big deal?
For $20-30 bucks a month you get access to everything you need in order to target every single in your body.
By that, I’m including the legs. Ah, legs…
I don’t want to say it but it’s true – it’s not very easy to big massive legs only with the help of your body weight.
That’s where weighted squats can save the day.
What are you going to need?
Well, I can’t really think of anything I have ever brought to the gym except my wrist wraps because you literally have everything in there.
After all, you are paying a lot of money for it.
If for some reason your gym is missing a lot of basic things then it’s probably time to look for a new one.
If you are going to lift some weights or simply want to protect your wrists from additional stress one of the best things you can do is to get yourself a nice pair of wrist wraps.
If you currently don’t own any I would recommend you try these ones.
These are the ones I actually use daily and have managed to stay in one piece after 2 years of constant abuse.
Biggest drawbacks of local gyms
The most obvious drawback is the required cash. If you want to go to a public gym you have to say bye-bye to $25-$30 of your hard-earned money every month.
And on top of that you will probably have to listen to a lot of grunting, cursing, screaming and annoying mainstream music.
And let’s not forget the narcissistic tank top steroid users who are more focused on how big are their arms are and are watching you furiously every time you do eye contact.
After all, you are doing bodyweight exercises in a gym! What a shame…
5. Doing Calisthenics When Travelling
If you travel a lot and you still want to stay in shape keep reading because there are some great tips coming your way.
How to do calisthenics when you travel?
The best tip I can give you is to always be prepared before you travel. With the right equipment at hand, you can do great workouts literally anywhere.
But in order to do those workouts, you are going to need equally good equipment.

What are you going to need?
When I travel I always take with me my set of resistance bands.
As I have already mentioned they are irreplaceable when it comes to size, weight, and functionality.
Especially if we are talking about flat loop resistance bands.
These are a complete beast when it comes to calisthenics. With a couple of different bands, you can do amazing workouts without the need for any other equipment.

Biggest drawbacks of doing calisthenics when you travel
The biggest problem I’ve had was I didn’t have a clue of what to expect.

And let’s be honest, when you are on vacation the last thing you want is to workout closed in a hot and tiny hotel room.
And almost always there isn’t any near pull-up bar when you really need it.
