All 5 look live very good products right?

Indeed there are.

But before I go into the reviews I want to quickly answer with the help of science this very important question you probably have…

Do you really need protein powder for calisthenics?

Although it’s not mandatory to include protein powder in your nutrition it can help you a lot if you combine it with the right meal plan.

Let’s see what are the 7 best reasons why you should add protein powder in your diet.

1. If you are recovering from an injury or because of one you can’t train for a certain period of time you must eat plenty of protein if you want to keep all your hard work intact. [4]

And guess what?

The fastest and cheapest way to get huge amounts of protein and BCAAs is going to be through a good protein powder.

That way you will maintain your current muscle mass and strength [5] while keeping your progress intact.

2. Protein supplements are a great choice for people looking to build muscle, lose fat and improve physical performance using bodyweight exercises (calisthenics) [6] because they are cheap, easy and fast to digest and can be carried and prepared anywhere.

3. If you have a diet with food restrictions and you are very limited on what you can eat getting enough protein might be a difficult thing to do.

With the help of protein powder, you can easily overcome this challenge and eat the exact portions you need.

4. Even if you can freely eat most products it won’t hurt if you decide and include an additional source of protein to your diet because it’s a lot cheaper than food.

You can also combine the powder with all kinds of different meals making every single meal more protein-rich and tasty.

It you haven’t tried protein pancakes you really should!

5. One of the best benefits of protein supplements is the fact that you can get a quick and easy dose of protein literally anywhere at any time you like.

Because of its powder form, you can easily carry a small amount everywhere with go. And once the time has come to take it you simply have to mix it with a little liquid (water or milk), shake a little and you are ready.

You have a healthy meal full of vitamins, minerals, and macronutrients for literally a few seconds.

No more cooking, prepping or carrying bulky food containers.

6. Protein powder has the ability to suppress sugar cravings.

Most powders taste amazing and sweet because use the natural sweetener called stevia.

This makes them a great replacement for any sugar cravings you might have.

Trust me drinking a protein shake will provide you with far greater benefits than eating something processed and filled with empty calories such as chocolate, or bisquits.

You said what?

7. Another great reason why you should buy a protein powder is the reason that some products include 5-6 grams of all the essential BCAAs with every scoop of protein you take.

That way you don’t have to invest additional money and get BCAAs as a separate supplement.

It’s also good to know that consuming the right amount of amino acids every day does help with recovery [7] and protects your muscles and strength from deteriorating. [8]

So if you want to save some cash, boost your overall results and make your meals delicious invest in one of the 5 products below.

Here we go…

1. Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard – Best Overall

My current protein powder

Click here to see Gold Standard’s latest price on Amazon <

For every serving, you are getting:

  • 24 grams of protein
  • 120 calories
  • 5.5 grams of BCAAs (which contain all the 18 most important amino acids)
  • 1 gram of sugar

The third protein powder we are going to review is made one of the giants in the supplement industry – Optimum Nutrition.

That by itself is enough evidence, making all your doubts disappear.

With the Gold Standard, you can easily get all your daily requirements of BCAAs met so you don’t need to spend extra money on additional supplements. With every scoop of powder, you are getting 24 grams of whey protein, 5.5 grams of BCAAs and 120 calories.

The reason behind the high amount of protein is the fact that this product is made with a combination of whey isolate, contrate and peptides.

All those ingredients have one goal at mind – to help you improve performance, build muscle and get stronger for your calisthenics workout regime.

So if you are really into bodyweight exercises this is something you may find helpful.

One of the crucial facts why this product is on this list is the fact that it uses only good and natural ingredients. You won’t find any banned or harmful substances inside.

Whatever taste you choose you will not feel disappointed because all 4 have quite a good taste in customers’ opinions. You are given the options of coffee, vanilla ice cream, chocolate, and mocha cappuccino.

This powder comes as all the others come with a measuring scoop and again has good mixing abilities leaving no lumps and clumps you have to chew afterward.

You don’t have to worry about overdosing with sugar because this supplement comes with only 1 gram of sugar per serving.

Finally, I want to mention that this item is a great option for gluten intolerant people because of the gluten-free substance it’s made from.

Quick Summary: If you are looking for a product made from a very well know and reputable brand which hasn’t lost its quality during the years you should definitely check out the Gold Standard.

It’s tasty, affordable, made from natural ingredients with good mixing abilities. Don’t forget that you also get a high amount of protein and BCAAs per serving. And on top of that this product has over 16800 positive reviews on Amazon as I’m writing this. This is insane and let the numbers speak for themselves.

2. BN Labs Grass-Fed Whey Protein – Best Price

Another very good protein you should try

Click here to see BN Labs Protein’s latest price on Amazon <

For every serving, you are getting:

  • 24 grams of protein
  • 115 calories
  • 6 grams of BCAAs (which contain all the 18 most important amino acids)
  • 2 grams of sugar

The next protein powder I’m going to review is pretty good when animal protein made by a famous brand named BN Labs.

Firstly I want to mention that BN Labs are offering you a great product for quite an affordable price compared to some more expensive brands with the exact same characteristics.

If you are an animal lover and want the best organic product then you are going to be quite happy to see that this protein is made by grass-fed cows.

That is for sure one of the reasons for the very good natural taste you get.

Actually, this product doesn’t contain any fillers, sweeteners or flavors.

So no more artificial ingredients to worry about. I know what you are thinking – because this protein doesn’t have any flavor it should taste quite blunt but that’s actually not the case.

People share that even by without adding anything else the taste is quite good and comes close to the one of regular milk. This way protein mixes well with water, milk and other liquids. It also works great in combination with other foods which makes it a pretty good choice as an extra ingredient.

All those things combined provide you a great boost for your body without increasing the calories too much. And don’t forget the fact that this product also saves you money because you don’t have to buy BCAAs additionally.

What I like about this brand and its protein powder is the fact that it uses a low amount of added sugar, and it doesn’t contain any soy, GMO or rBGH (recombinant bovine growth hormone) meaning you will not feed your body with even worse ingredients.

If you are new to BN Labs and haven’t tried their products yet it is recommended that you went for their 1 pound package for testing.

Then if you like it you can go for the 5-pound option. Because I’m almost certain you are going to like it I would recommend you to go after the 5-pound option because always buying in bulk is the cheaper option.

Finally, I want to mention that this is one of the few products that are made in the USA which is something I really like.

Quick Summary: If you are looking for a natural flavorless product that you are going to be sure it’s made out of natural and healthy ingredients than this might be a good choice for you. The pricing is good and it’s made in the USA. You won’t get wrong if you decide to go after this brand and product because it’s backed up with 500+ positive reviews by time I’m writing this. Click the button below if you want to see what other people think about this product.

3. Legion Whey Isolate Protein – No Sugar

Yep, this protein contains 0 grams of sugar

Click here to see BN Labs Protein’s latest price on Amazon <

For every serving, you are getting:

  • 22 grams of protein
  • 100 calories
  • 0 grams of sugar

The second good product offered by Legion contains 90+% pure protein. It’s a whey protein isolate that has almost no carbs or fats. That means you are getting the biggest amount of protein for the least amount of calories.

To be specific that’s 22 grams of protein per 100 calories which is quite impressive.

If you are on a cutting phase during your calisthenic workouts this protein powder might be a great option for you. What makes this product great is the fact that is made out of grass-fed cows in Ireland and doesn’t use any non-natural sweeteners, fillers, antibiotics, hormones and other bad stuff you really want to avoid.

Like the previous model, this one is again very reasonably priced and every penny is worth because of the good quality you receive in return. Previous uses confirm that the taste is good and a big factor about that is the fact that this product comes in 10 different tastes to choose from.

We are talking about vanilla, chocolate, cereal milk, cookies, and cream, etc.

I know what you are thinking right now:

All those tastes are created with the help of artificial ingredients”.

As a matter of fact, they are not. Legion has made sure all tastes come from natural sources so you don’t have to worry about that.

With one of the biggest taste options on the market and the combination of proper ingredients, it isn’t difficult to see why it’s going to taste very good (That has been confirmed again and again via previous customers).

A unique fact is that even if this product is made from animals all lactose has been removed making it a great choice for all lactose-intolerant people who are looking for the best protein powder for calisthenics.

It also has great mixing abilities with milk, water and other foods making it quite versatile and easy to use. Let’s wrap this review by 2 cool facts. Firstly this product is again made in the USA which does have its perks and it comes backed by a 90-day refund policy.

Quick Summary:

If you are looking for a big variety of taste options and still don’t want to lose quality with artificial and dangerous ingredients than this product offered by Legion might be a good choice for you.

It’s made out of grass-fed cows, natural additives and offers you a great amount of protein with the combination of low calories. Over 2100 people have left great reviews online. And I completely understand why.

4. Vega Plant-Based Vegan Protein – Great for Vegans

This is the best protein for vegans

Click here to see Vega’s latest price on Amazon <

For every serving, you are getting:

  • 20 grams of protein
  • 140 calories
  • 0 grams of sugar
  • 1 gram of Omega 3

If you are a vegan who is into calisthenics then this protein might be a good choice. All the content is made by protein-rich plants such as pea, hemp, and flaxseed.

That makes it also ideal for people with gluten or lactose intolerance. With this great product, I believe Vega proves why you can still build muscle and strength only with the help of plant-based protein foods.

I mean the fact that you are getting 20 grams of protein per serving is quite impressive and something to notice.

I really like the fact that not only are you getting protein but, you are also getting 12 different vitamins and minerals and 1 gram of Omega 3 with every serving because of all the healthy plants that this product is made of.

You can’t really argue that this is something plant-based protein is better about compared to the traditional animal-based protein powder.

If you are following the keto diet you won’t have issues including this protein into your meal plan because it’s keto-friendly. It’s also made of natural plant-based ingredients and doesn’t use any artificial colors. flavours, preservatives, sugars, soy or GMO.

What I like about this product is the fact that it uses stevia as a natural sweetener. Stevia is proven to be a lot healthier than traditional sugar.

When talking about the number of calories you are getting 140 cal. per serving which is more than some of the previous brands reviewed above.

That could be a good or bad thing depending on your current goals and calorie needs.

Vegan protein does taste quite good and is an essential supplement for people who are living this lifestyle because of the more difficult ways to get enough protein daily. You have the option to choose out of 3 flavors coming from natural sources – chocolate, mocha, and vanilla.

Finally, let’s wrap everything by saying that even with all those great benefits Vega has stayed competitive and has quite a reasonable price for this great product.

Quick Summary:

Even if you are a vegan or not I highly recommend you to go after this great protein because of the large number of vitamins, minerals, and benefits it brings you in your diet.

Everything is made out of plants and all the goodies they bring you. With its help, you are easily going to reach your daily needs for continuous progression in your calisthenics journey. The quality of this product is backed up by the 500+ great reviews you can see online.

It comes in chocolate and vanilla flavor options both made from natural sources.

Organic Muscle has made sure you are going to get a high amount of protein per serving with the impressive 24 grams. That’s quite a lot compared to the previous supplement.

The fact that this plant-based protein is USDA certified is something you should take in mind because getting this type of certificate isn’t an easy or fast task.

Even if you are a vegan or not this product is an excellent choice that can easily fill your daily protein needs.

With 150 calories per scoop, this is the richest powder out of all 5 models. If you are currently bulking and want to get bigger and stronger with the help of calisthenics this might be something to look up.

Exactly as the previous model, this supplement doesn’t contain any GMO, chemicals, hormones, preservatives, artificial ingredients or gluten.

So if you are looking for something natural that has a great taste and contains all 9 essential amino acids, extra vitamins and minerals then you should definitely check out what Organic Muscle is offering.

I know how annoying it can be to chew slumps of dry protein powder but you won’t have that problem with this model because people share that it mixes good with other foods and liquids such as water, almond milk, all sort of juices, etc.

Even with all those great qualities, the price is still nice making it another great option from our list.

With a great price, you are also getting pretty decent customer service that can be useful if you have additional questions or issues.

Another cool thing I believe is worth mentioning is that for every sold unit money is being donated for planting trees in Africa by an organization called Trees of the Future.

Quick Summary:

This is one of the best protein powders you can find for calisthenics. It has everything you really want a good supplement to have and it has got quite a reasonable price.

You get a great amount of protein, vitamins, taste and good customer service. If you are looking for something good go check out this model made from a trustworthy brand.

Features to look for when choosing the best protein for calisthenics

In this section, you are going to see what exactly should you really look for in a good product. I believe every single part from this section is equally important so I would recommend you not to skip or ignore any of the following information.

We are talking about your health and something you are going to consume so if you care about your wellbeing it’s time to get educated so you can make the right decision.

Let’s get into the cool stuff!

Are there any types of protein powders?

As a matter of fact, there are a lot.

For the sake of simplicity and time, I’m going to briefly explain to you only the 2 main types which are animal-based protein and Plant-based protein.

The other main reason is that in the top 5 list above I’m going to review only products based on those 2 types.

Animal-based protein

If I have to be honest with you this is the most know protein powder. This type of protein is made out of animals and it’s a good choice for vegans.

It’s made out of 3 different types – whey, casein, and collagen.

We are going to focus mainly on the whey option because I believe that whey protein is the best choice for calisthenics.

Speaking of whey, it comes in different purification levels. By that I mean the amount of protein you get per 100 grams. The purest the level the more protein you will usually get.

The downside of this is that you also get quite a little calories which could be something not very helpful if you are bulking up and looking to eat as many calories as you can.

What is the purification level?

Depending on your current goals you might want to get the one or the other.

The purest form of the whey protein is called isolate. In isolate, you will find the biggest amount of protein and the least amount of calories.

Second, comes protein hydrolysate which is designed for people with a sensitive stomach and little more calories and less protein.

At the bottom goes whey concentrate which has gone with the least amount of filtering resulting in less protein and more carbs and fats which is equal to more calories.

As you have seen there isn’t a definite winner because we all have different needs and goals.

But if you ask me I would tell you to go after the isolate because it’s a lot harder to get high-quality protein than calories.

Especially if you are into calisthenics and you would need a ton.

Plant-based protein

This is the most organic and natural way to get high-quality protein from plants. Most brands use plants such as pea, rice, hemp, etc as the main component.

This is a great choice for vegans and people who are trying to eat a diet free from lactose and animal products.

I really like the fact that you are getting a lot more from those plants than just basic macronutrients.

We are talking about extra vitamins, minerals, Omega 3 and much more useful stuff. Even if not quite well know I truly believe this is a great option for people looking to get healthier.

Ingredients

I’m aware that nobody is going to do this but if you take only one thing from this article I want it to be this:

Take the time to read the label and find out what really in there!

A good tip you can always do in order to see how pure is really a supplement is to check out the number of total ingredients using the label. Your goal should be to go for the product which has the least amount of additives. The smaller the number the better quality you will get.

Example: If I had 2 products and the first uses 10 substances and the other has 16 I would go for the one with the 10.

Another tip is to stay away as much as possible from bad additions such as artificial colors, all types of sugars, excessive amounts of sodium and ingredients you are not familiar with.

If you happen to see an ingredient you don’t recognize do a quick google search with its name and educate yourself in the terms what it is and is it harmful or not.

I want to be completely honest and tell you that some manufacturers don’t care about anyone and are just there to make a profit and will use extremely dangerous additives. The fact that you can read it on the label doesn’t make it automatically safe.

Trust me, making these small steps could be really helpful in the long term.

How much protein per scoop?

Let’s be real, this is one of the first things we look before we select a specific brand and product. And this is exactly right. This is certainly one of the key factors when it comes to protein powders.

The golden rule you should follow is this:

You want to have at least 20 grams of protein per every scoop you take.

If for any reason a brand offers a smaller amount than 20 that usually means its content is full of unwanted ingredients and fillers. So you may not be even eating protein powder after all. That’s why I highly recommend you stay away from those types of products.

The bigger the number the purer the protein you get.

What about sugar?

Unfortunately, in our modern society, we are getting a lot more sugar than our bodies really need. The main reason behind this is all the processed food and unknown ingredients that continue to get added to our food. That’s the reason why quality continues to deteriorate.

That’s why when picking a model read the label and if you see that it has too much sugar per dose just skip it. I have seen that some product labels don’t even show the number of sugars there is.

If you happen to come up with such a product I would recommend you to stay away from it. I believe there is a reason behind why it’s really missing and it’s not something in our favor.

Today’s most companies replace traditional sugar with artificial sweeteners. They use different names to hide it so regular users like me and you won’t know it’s sugar (unless we do a google research…). If you do this regularly you will see all the hidden sugars you are not aware of.

Quick Tip: To be completely safe go for a product with a very low amount of added sugars or even better – one that uses Stevia as a replacement to the traditional sugar.

Stevia is proven to be a healthier option and gives you the same sweet taste you want.

The number of calories

Not all supplements are made equal. Every single type provides you with a different number of calories per scoop or 100 grams of product.

Thet number can usually differentiate between 100 to 150 calories.

That doesn’t seem a lot but if you are taking 2-3 scoops every day because you want to meet your daily requirements that about 100-150 extra calories.

If you are on a weight loss journey and that’s the main focus on your calisthenics training then that additional calories might be something you don’t want.

So depending on your personal goal go after a model with more or fewer calories per serving.

Whatever choice you make please don’t overthink it. As if it’s important it’s surely not the most important factor and you should take too much time thinking about it.

The protein which I’m using now as I’m writing this has around 100 calories per portion. That’s not a lot but I’m taking it really because of the 22 grams of protein it brings me.

What about artificial flavors and preservatives?

Believe me, I understand the importance of a good taste but make sure it doesn’t come with a price.

The good news is that you don’t really have to make any sacrifices towards your health when it comes to taste because more and more companies are starting to use natural sources as a starting point of good flavors.

So for all people who still believe that protein must taste like sand to be healthy, you are wrong.

To keep it short keep away from preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors and anything that doesn’t sound natural.

Taking such things regularly could lead to unwanted side effects such as gases, stomach bloating and cramps and even in some cases skin reactions.

So try avoiding such things at any cost! If you have to pay more pay. Trust me we are talking about your health being on the line.

Do you want to have BCAAs inside your protein powder?

Let’s be honest – amino acids can be really helpful towards your calisthenics journey for additional muscle growth, recovery and help with fatigue, etc.

So the short answer is – yes you certainly want them!

The good news is that many famous brands in the supplement industry do add them so you can have a decent amount of amino acids for every scoop you take.

Quick Note: Out of all BCAAs, Leucine is the most important so read the label and see if it is included in big amounts. Go for a model and brand that offers you a decent amount of Leucine.

So you have liked a model but it doesn’t have any amino acids inside. Should you skip it?

Even if your favorite choice doesn’t have them you don’t have to really worry about them too much because you can easily get them separately.

The good news is that they are not that expensive either and to be completely honest you don’t need them to see progress but if you have the budget and time to take them it won’t hurt you to add some.

What is the speed of digestion?

Faster digestion and absorbent than regular food is one of the main reasons people prefer adding supplements into their training regimes.

But what if I tell you that there are types of protein that are going to take a longer time for your body to digest and absorb. We are talking about casein and whey.

Depending on which one of the two options you have picked you will have a longer or shorter time.

Let’s check both options so you can pick the one that hits your calisthenic goals the best.

When do you need faster digestion?

Whey and plant-based protein are usually digested quicker talking about 4 hours to get fully absorbed by your body.

The ideal place in which you need this kind of protein is right after you have finished your calisthenics workout. At this point, your body needs protein to recover.

It is recommended for you to fuel your body as fast as possible to start the recovery process.

The faster speed is also something really helpful throughout the day so you can easily provide your body with constant easy protein fuel throughout the form of supplements.

When do you need slower digestion?

Protein made from casein is digested more slowly than when or plant-based options and it takes you around 7 hours to fully absorb it.

The best use for this type of fuel is during the night when you are sleeping. The logic behind this is the fact that when you are sleeping you don’t really eat or drink anything.

Your body is somewhat starving and by taking a dose of casein right before you go to bed you are making sure it’s going to get constant nutrition throughout the whole night. If you keep everything empty you are risking your body to start using your muscles as energy.

So depending on your daily goals, requirements and nutrition plan pick a model that is going to work great with your calisthenic regime.

Taste

There isn’t anything worse than your protein shake tasting like sand…

– Unknown

If you are going to drink something regularly you 100% want it to taste good. This doesn’t apply if you are going to mix it with other products that have quite strong tastes.

Then you are not really going to see any difference whatsoever but if you drink it as a separate beverage without any additions then you will see why taste is so important.

Unfortunately, some brand produces products with weak taste, way to sweet taste or even worse – protein with a chalky aftertaste. If you have already paid and bought a big amount (yep, I feel you..) then your only solution is to mix it with many other tastier things.

If you are going to get protein powder with a specific taste please make sure that the taste comes from a natural source and it’s not artificially made.

Finally, I want to mention that some brands offer quite big taste variations so you are provided with the freedom to go for a flavor you really like.

Quick Tip:

If I have to go for a taste that is not my favorite or a type of protein that tastes amazing but it uses artificial sweeteners to achieve this I would go for the harder choice and go for a more natural solution aka different brand and product.

I know this is not the best option for your taste but if you care about your health you will be glad you made that decision.

How well does it mix?

I know that you are probably confused about why I decided to add this feature inside this important point.

Let me tell you a short story so you understand why.

A while ago I bought a cheap protein and tried to mix it with water and the result was pretty bad. By that I really mean bad…

No matter how hard I shook the whole shaker or use a spoon to steer it the powder just didn’t want to mix with the water. It looked like it was made of some sort of waterproof material.

Instead of the delicious mixture, I got big lumps of powder I had to chew right after a hardcore calisthenics workout and as an even better result, all that powder stuck all around my mouth and teeth.

It was a pretty bad experience I don’t wish anybody and it could be even worsened if I had no additional water to wash it down with.

So don’t be like me and go for a powder that has the ability to mix well with whatever liquid you prefer drinking it with. You can learn how good it mixes with any sort of liquid or food from the reviews or to simply ask somebody you know that has used the same powder.

Quick Tip:

Aim for a product that can mix well with both cold or hot liquids so you can have tasty and healthy boost all year round

Who is behind the product?

In today’s crowded marketplace there are hundreds and even thousands of big or small companies selling the same products with little differences in some occasions.

Your goal should be to pick a company that really does stand behind its product and treat customers properly.

If you have the spare time you can check out the brand’s reputation on social media, read some reviews about them online, see for how long are they into business, learn what is their customer service like, take a quick look on what other products are they promoting, are they good, etc.

With our guide of the top 5 best protein for calisthenics list, we are already done this job for you.

We made sure all products and companies are of high quality and are trustworthy and honest. If you want to check them out please scroll up until you find them.

What about the product price?

I truly do believe in supplements and their help with your calisthenic workouts. Anything that has the ability to make your life easier and help you reach your goals faster is worth its price.

As you can see there are quite expensive and quite cheap options on the market as almost every single product on the market. Once you have a clue about the average price you should go after something in the middle price range.

From what have I seen we are talking a very rough estimate of about $50.

Another great tip is to aim for products that cost about $1 up to $1.50 per serving.

Anything above is way too overpriced and is just not worth it.

If you can find a lot cheaper product than that claims to have the same features, quality and ingredients I would stay away because it’s most likely some sort of a scam.

If something is questionably cheap then ignore it – it’s not worth it.

Don’t forget the fact that you are going to consume it!

Final Thoughts (and our winner…)
