If you haven’t been there then you must be some kind of an alien or a superhero!

Okay, leaving the joke aside, a good piece of headphones should also fit your ears comfortably without creating unwanted tightness.

Not all models are created equal and every ear is different from one another which makes the whole experience very individual. You need to go for a model that will fit you as nicely as possible. 

A good way to find out whether a specific model is designed for you is to try it on if a friend or a family member already has it or just to compare it to a great model you already own and try to find something similar.

Can hold on a lot of sweat (sweat proof)

This one is really important…

Usually, during hot time or high demanding bodyweight workouts, you will sweat a lot. Some of that sweat will accumulate on your ears making its way downwards.

I have personally made this mistake before because I used a non-sweat resistant pair of wireless headphones on a few hardcore calisthenic workouts on a pull-up bar and unfortunately the right one slowly became quieter until it stopped working.

This may seem somehow similar to the last part but I need to be clear.

Believe me, sweat is nothing compared to this and if your headphones are not well isolated you will most likely have to buy new ones shortly after.

It guarantees that everything would be working fine even if you submerge the headphones in about 1 meter for 30 minutes.

That is quite impressive because even if you drop your precious earpieces into a puddle or a stream by mistake you will not have any issues. That’s why I believe this feature is most definitely a must-have.

If you want to be even more sure that water can’t damage your headphones you can opt for the next level and get a pair that uses IPX8. As you have probably guessed this is an upgrade from the IPX7 meaning your headset can withstand a much longer and deeper water experience. 

In my opinion, the IPX7 would be enough for most people who are looking to find the best headphones for calisthenics and want to make sure they are well protected.

Side Note:

I advise you not to save money on quality. Let me give you a personal example. When I bought my camera that cost me nearly 2 thousand bucks I decided that I won’t need a protective case for just $40.

Guess what… Just a few weeks later, my camera got wet and stopped working. The best part is that it couldn’t even be repaired. So I had to splash out another 2 grand. I’m telling you that simply because I want you to learn from my mistakes.

Type of connection

When it comes to connections there are 2 types – via the regular 3.5 mm audio jack and via Bluetooth. Both have their own pros and cons when it comes to user experience. Let’s start with the more well-known one.

The Regular 3.5 mm audio Connection

Some of the things I like about the regular cable connection is the fact that you can use it as long as you like without needing to recharge it. It’s also compatible with older sound devices such as iPods, CD players, older or simpler types of mobile phones as of course with the latest technology smartphones, laptops, etc. 

To use them you need to have a longer cable and to carry around with you your music playing device. That can be quite dangerous if you are doing some explosive type of calisthenics training such as muscle-ups because if not properly secured you can easily break your device by falling from a pretty high distance. 

Yep, that’s the reason for the broken front screen of my phone… 

Attention: Please do NOT forget to zip your pockets!

The downside is that you have to constantly disembroil the tangled cable every time you want to use them.

Bluetooth Connection

What I really like about this type of connection is the freedom it provides you with. You can easily leave your device at a few feet away and still be able to listen to some epic music while doing great bodyweight exercises for your calisthenics journey. With a few buttons, you can regulate the sound, stop and start the music, change the songs and answer calls. 

A very cool feature is the fact that some models have a range as high as around 100 feet which is pretty nice. Most models have an average of around 33 feet of coverage. 

One thing I really don’t like, however, is when they stop working in the middle of your workout because the battery has died or the fact that I have to constantly make sure they are charged before I take them with me.

Even with all those minuses I still highly recommend them to anyone who is looking to find great wireless headphones for calisthenics.

Talking about wireless headphones there are 2 different types it’s good for you to know about. Let’s get a quick overview of each one of them and find out which type is the better one and why.

Wireless Headphones

These are the best-known wireless headphones which use a special tangle-free cable to hold them together. Somewhere in the middle of the cable, you can find a little control on which you can find all the buttons and LED lights. 

I really like those and till recent I had a pair but unfortunately because of the cable they stopped working which leads me to the second type of wireless headphones…

True Wireless Headphones

They are the upgraded version of the simple wireless headphones and are usually 2 earbuds that don’t have any cable. Both earbuds sit on a portable charger case which you can easily carry around in your pocket or backpack. 

I do really prefer them over the more simple wireless headphones because almost every single problem that you might face will be caused by the cable.

Lacking a cable will increase its total lifespan and the fact that you have a portable charging station in your pocket makes the whole process of recharging when needed way easier.

Answering phone calls?

I know how distracting it can be when you receive a phone call in the middle of a working set. Sometimes you just have to answer it no matter what you are doing. No matter the type of the headset or the type of connection you are using, it will most likely have a built-in microphone. 

I know that there are models without a pre-built microphone so that’s a thing to consider before you get yourself a pair of headphones.

The main difference when it comes to answering phone calls comes if you are using a wireless set or not. The wireless technology allows you to simply answer by a click of a button so you don’t really need to check your phone and do it manually. 

That little fact can be really handy if you don’t want to distract yourself too much during your workout. If your smart device is using Bluetooth 4.1 you will be able to do that in a range of 100 feet while the older version of 4.0 can get you the average of 33 feet of distance.

Quality of the sound

I can tell you from my personal experience that buying some super cheap earpieces does have its downsides when it comes to sound quality. Every brand and model use different technologies and have unique characteristics for the quality of sound it provides you with.

If you have to pay a little extra in order to get crispier sound go for it.

You will not regret this decision.

I really can’t emphasize enough on how important this part can be. If you are really into music and want to receive the best sound possible then you should definitely pay some extra attention to this factor.

How good is the back noise cancellation?

Regarding your needs, there are different types of open or closed designs that could have a different level of noise cancellation. 

If you are looking to get the best back noise cancellation headphones for calisthenics or any other type of training you should be looking for ones that have either a very good snug over the ear design or have a close earbud design. 

Another solution you can consider if you have picked a more open design is to check if your smartphone has an active noise cancellation feature. This feature allows the phone to generate an inverse type of signal which helps to reduce back noise. 

A great thing about this which in my opinion is in some ways better than a closed design is the fact that you can turn it on and off whenever you like. If for example, you need to be able to hear something else when you are using the headphones you can just turn this feature off and you are done.

Finally, if you want to completely shut yourself off the outside world and focus entirely on your workout then buying a set of great noise cancellation headphones can be really helpful.

How well are they built and what materials are used?

It is common sense that when you are using headphones for any type of physical activity they will undergo a lot of beating, sweat, water, unexpected drops, the cable being pulled out suddenly and much more.

If you want to keep them in a good shape and want them to still work you must make sure they are quite durable and made with good materials.

I know that some of you might not like what I’m saying but from my own experience and the experience of some close friends of mine we all have come to the conclusion that usually the more you pay the better quality of electronics and materials you get. 

I would recommend you to pick headphones from known brands which are guaranteed to have good materials and don’t rely on some cheap replicas or unknown brands that have some great metrics at the beginning but I’m almost sure they will not be working after a few months down the line.

Take notice how well the cable is handled at the ends because usually, this is the place where the cable breaks first leaving you with a pair of non-working headphones.

Should you consider style when choosing the best headphones for calisthenics?

In my opinion, this is the last thing you should worry about when buying a great set of headphones. By style, I mean the color scheme, overall aesthetics, design, etc. Your first goal should be functionality and comfort. 

Only after you’ve met all your criteria should you look for different color versions etc. I believe there are some very visually appealing models out there so you wouldn’t have a hard time picking your personal winner.

How much should you pay for a good pair of headphones?

I can’t tell you an exact number and be done with it because it’s not that simple. It depends on your budget and personal needs and wants which makes the whole process of defining a product as cheap or expensive really individual.

I’ve done my best to give you a great variety of products with affordable prices so it will be easier for you to pick the best one for you.

I would recommend staying away from the cheapest models because they are most likely of very poor quality and you would need to replace them quite often. 

You still don’t want to overpay too so go for something in the middle – neither too expensive nor too cheap. You can most definitely find awesome headphones for that price.

How good is the battery life?

If you are into wireless headphones then battery life is a key factor and you should not underestimate it. Just imagine how annoying it would be if you had to recharge them constantly.

Let’s check them out.

The more traditional wireless cable headset uses a bigger battery and can usually work longer than its smaller competitor. The best models can hold for at least 8 hours

The true wireless version can hold half of that which is somewhere around 4 hours because of the very compact size. For some people, 4 hours might seem like nothing but I believe it will be enough for your calisthenics workouts if you are doing them correctly.
