Hi there, my name is Bozhidar and in this article, I’m going to use all my previous experience and knowledge to help you select the best adjustable dumbells for P90X and other types of similar training.

Once you own solid dumbells you can do literally anything.

As a person who owns a couple of different sets of adjustable dumbbells, I can really help you make the right decision.

So without any further ado, let’s see which are my favorite ones and why…

In a hurry?

I know that some of you won’t have the available time to read the whole thing (which you should) so I highly recommend you check out my personal adjustable dumbbells I use almost every time I train at homethe Bowflex SelectTech 552 Set.

My favorite adjustable dumbbells I own

I really prefer to train using these dumbbells over my other ones (which you will see shortly) because they take only a couple of seconds to adjust the weight and have a relatively high stand.

In addition to that, they are really well made (I’ve been using them for a while now without any problems) and offer enough resistance so you can train your whole body. (5 to 52.5 lbs)

The handles are wide enough so you get enough space and the overall size of the dumbbells isn’t too bulky and uncomfortable.

But the best thing I like the most about them is the fact that you get 15 different weights from the 2.5 and 5 lbs increments.

In my opinion, these adjustable dumbbells are a must-have because they have a nice price, solid quality, a lot of useful features, and many happy customers (including me).

Do you want to learn more about them and read more reviews like mine?

After you’ve seen all the products I’m going to talk about let’s get more in-depth so you can pick the best ones for you…

Top 5 Best Adjustment Dumbbells for P90x and P90X3 You Can Afford

Below you are going to find a list with the top 5 adjustable and affordable dumbbells you can get. (2 of which I personally own)

It doesn’t really matter which ones you would go for because all 5 dumbbell sets are made using solid materials, have plenty of nice features, enough weight, good prices and have been tested by hundreds of happy customers worldwide. (including me)

With that being said, let’s begin with my favorite set of adjustable dumbbells…

1. Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells – Best Adjustable Dumbbells for P90X and P90X3

These are my absolute favorite adjustable dumbbells I own

My personal favorite adjustable dumbbells made by Bowflex are one of the highest-rated products on the market.

And that is for a reason…

In my opinion, the Bowflex SelectTech has all the needed features and quality.

It’s very easy to use, has enough weight (between 5 and 52.5 lbs) and uses one of the smallest increments I have seen – 2.5 lbs for the first 25 lbs.

I know that for some of you these may not be impressive numbers but from experience, I can tell that this is enough weight for P90X and many of the basic exercises.

But my favorite feature from these dumbbells are the 15 different weight options you get.

With only a quick turn of 2 buttons, you have instant access to 15 different weights you can use for all types of different exercises you can think.

Just imagine how much space and money you would need to get the same amount from tradition fixed dumbbells…

That’s why these are my favorite adjustable dumbbells that save you a ton of money and space.

Even if this has nothing to do with the functionality I have to say that I really like the unique space-saving design that looks awesome and it’s going to be a great addition to any home gym.

As I said earlier with this model, you can change the weight quickly and smoothly with the help of the innovative dial rotatable system.

The system works great in a combination with the included base.

The base also serves well for storage and keeps everything safe and ready for the next workout.

But even more impressive is the great additional stand you can also get for a reasonable price.

Click here for mode details on the dumbbells and the stand

I’ve used these dumbbells for hundreds of workouts and so far there aren’t any problems.

That’s why I believe that the Bowflex SelectTech are quite durable because of the good molding and proper materials they are made from.

So don’t worry, your home gym investment is going to last if properly cared for.

Speaking of which I have to say that even with such great product this set has one big drawback…

You can’t drop the weights to the floor because there is a high chance that something will break.

Even if they are super durable you still have to be careful.

If you can’t workout without trowing some weights around I highly recommend you to go for the ones I have which I’m going to review below – the CAP Adjustable Set

When it comes to size the Bowflex 552 are little bulkier than the typical gym weights but you still won’t have a problem doing all sorts of exercises because everything is well balanced and designed.

I’ve used mine for countless exercises targeting all muscle groups of my body.

When it comes to gripping the texture of the handle is good and the surface is wide and thick enough so you shouldn’t have any problems.

It’s also good to know that with these weights you are also are getting 2-year parts and plates warranty. I’ve never had to use mine but it’s good to know that you are backed up in case of emergency.

As you can see these are one great adjustable dumbbells and that’s why I believe that they are one of the best adjustable dumbbells for P90X and are definitely worth a shot.

Quick Summary:

With all the great features, unique design and high-quality materials, I’m pretty sure you are going to love training with the the Bowflex SelectTech 552.

Even with its flaws I still believe this is one of the best sets for P90X you can get.

If you don’t believe me click the link below and see for yourself.

2. CAP Adjustable Dumbbell Set (40 to 200 Pounds) – Most Affordable Adjustable Dumbbells for Home Gym

My other adjustable set of adjustable dumbbells (really heavy)

Click Here to check CAP Dumbbells’ latest price on Amazon

As a person who has already bought them, I would want to say that these are the most affordable adjustable dumbbells you can find in today’s market.

And what makes the deal even better is the fact that this product is offered by CAP – a very well known brand with over 30 years of experience in the fitness industry.

With this specific product you have the option to choose one of 3 different sets – 40, 60 and 200 lbs.

Even if I own the 200 lbs set (as you can see from the photo) I still believe that for P90X the 60 lbs version is going to be enough.

But if you have the money feel free to go for the heaviest option because the more weight you have – the better.

What I like is the fact that the 40-pound set comes with a carrying case with a handle for easy storage and portability.

Despite the weight set you choose you are going to get a lot of different sized plates with whose help you can adjust the weights by hand in 2.5 lbs increments.

Even if adjusting them takes little more time than the Bowflex system I still prefer them because the locking screw type system is extremely safe and can withstand a lot of beating.

I find this set to be extremely durable because the weights are made from cast iron and the handles are made from solid steel

All the weight plates have a cool semi-gloss finish which not only does help them look good but it also protects them from rust and oxidation.

I’ve used mine for countless different workouts and unless the few scratches they look like brand new.

Now that’s what I call high-quality…

The thickness and length of the handles are good and they are also threaded for a better more secure grip.

One additional small feature I want to mention is the rubber you are going to find on the outer part of both handles and the inside of the star-shaped collars.

Here’s the rubber I’m talking about

This rubber is there to protect both your handles and plates from scratches, bouncing and damage.

One of the biggest reasons why I’ve bough the CAP Dumbbells except the extra weight are the plates.

With their 1-inch diameter you can adapt and use them with a long bar, EZ-curl bar or even a home gym cable machine

But the best part is this…

If for some reason the resistance you initially get is not enough and you need more you can simply buy and add additional weights or replaces the current disks with heavier ones.

Yes, it’s that simple and it works perfectly!

Just make sure they are the correct size before you order some!

In my opinion that is one crucial component that is missing into more complicated designs.

In my opinion, this is a great product you definitely must include in your home gym.

Quick Summary:

If you are looking for a simple yet extremely durable and multifunctional set of adjustable dumbbells for your P90X or any type of workouts you should deffinetly check mine CAP Dumbbells Set.

Their price, quality, and features are really good and I believe they are a great option for anybody looking to built a solid home gym.

3. PowerBlock GF-SPDBLK24 Adjustable Dumbbells – Most Compact Adjustable Dumbbells for Home Gym

A friend of mine owns these and they are still awesome
A friend of mine owns these and they are very awesome

Click Here to check PowerBlock’s latest price on Amazon

The third product I’m going to review is way more different and unique than the previous two.

What I like most about this model is the fact that it’s very affordable and overall very easy to use.

You only have to adjust the pin to the weight you want to use and you are ready which takes only a couple of seconds

As you can see the weight adjustment is quick and easy to do and it’s even easier to remember which one is which with the help of the color coding for different weights.

In my opinion, the Powerblock has the most unique and space-saving design I have seen.

That makes it ideal for people with very limited space that still want to get all the benefits the other models offer.

Because of that, it’s far better than the traditional dumbbells and costs only a fraction of their price.

But the best part is the weight. These bad boys come as a set of 24 lbs a piece.

Even if 24 lbs is half the Bowflex and fraction of the CAP dumbbells it is still going to be enough for a lot of people.

It’s also good to know that Every block has 8 different weight options with 3-pound increments.

As you can guess this product is on my list because it’s made from durable and quality materials that are going to last a very long time.

Because of that, the whole construction of the Powerblock is steady and secure and it doesn’t make clicking noises when you are using them (like many other products do).

Even with its odd shape, people share that the balance and resistance are good.

Speaking of good feeling the handles are extra padded for additional comfort and stronger non-slip grip.

With all those great features I believe these adjustable dumbbells are ideal for P90X and many other similar types of training.

And finally, I want to mention that PowerBlock does come with a 10-year warranty which is one of the biggest guarantees I have seen on products from that price range.

Quick Summary:

If you are looking for something lightweight, portable and strong you should deffinetly check the PowerBlock.

With these dumbbells every little detail is on point.

The durability is good and it’s really easy to adjust the weight and the weight is enough for the majority of the exercises.

4. Bayou Fitness Adjustable Dumbbells Set – Best Adjustable Dumbbells With Thick Grip Handles

These dumbbells are really nice looking and great for building solid grip strength
These dumbbells are really nice looking and great for building solid grip strength

Click Here to check Bayou Fitness’s latest price on Amazon

The forth product I want to show you is another great set offered by a company named Bayou Fitness.

Even if their item is not as popular as some of the previous 3 models I believe it’s worth a place in this list because of the good features it brings.

For the price, you are paying you are getting a nice pair of either 25 or 50 lbs set with 10 pounds of weight increments.

In order to change the weight, you simply have to pull and move the pin.

Even if not with the best overall adjustment design it’s still faster than the basic hand tightening my CAP dumbells use.

The overall size and shape make this design very compact and eye-pleasing.

I really like the chrome finish on the plates and handle.

Speaking of the handle I want to mention the fact that it’s quite thick making it a great choice for people wanting to develop big grip strength and size.

With the big diameter of the handle, you are also getting good holding surface and somewhat nice texture.

What I find interesting is that the handle itself weighs around 10 lbs. (without any plates attached)

That could be very helpful for some isolation exercises.

When it comes to quality everything is made from strong and durable materials.

For example the silver plates are made from plated steel in combination with a beautiful chrome finish for extra protection against rust and oxidation

Every piece of the set comes with its own tray that is really helpful with storage and functionality.

With the help of the tray you won’t have to worry about dumbbells rolling around freely. (Yes, it’s really annoying)

Everything is designed to be super strong and safe so you won’t have to worry about plates falling down or hearing any annoying clunking sounds while working out.

It’s also good to know that with this purchase, you are also getting a 180 day (6 months) manufacturer’s warranty against defects.

Even if this is not a perfect product, I still believe it’s something you should check out if you are a big fan of the P90X or P90X3 program.

Quick Summary:

If you are looking for some solid, heavy and easy to adjust dumbbells you should take a closer look on the Bayou Fitness set

They are affordable, beautiful and cleverly designed. That’s why I believe this set could be a great addition to any home gym.

5. Ringstar Adjustable Dumbbells (65, 105 or 200 Lbs) – Best Adjustable Dumbbells for Beginners

Click Here to check Ringstar’s latest price on Amazon

In the final and fifth choice I want to give you another good pair of adjustable dumbbells made by a company called Ringstar.

Even if Ringstar are not one of the most famous brands as some of the previous products their set of weights is still really good and worth the time.

I’ve included their set of weights because of the great competitive price, decent quality and nice features.

As you can see from the picture this model at first glance isn’t very different from my personal CAP set I use (the second product) but there are a few main differences that separate them.

The first big notice is the pricing – the Ringstar set is proven to be somewhat more affordable to an extent.

What I like is that even with it’s reasonable price the overall quality is still very good.

The second and my personal favorite difference are the 2 safety trays you get.

I find them to be very useful and convenient when it comes to storing properly the weights when not in use.

You can buy these dummbells at 3 different sets: 65, 105 or 200 lbs.

Whatever one you pick you are still going to get a lot of different sized plates that you can use on other home gym equipment.

With this type of weight, you are getting 5 lbs of increments.

The whole dumbbells are extremely durable because the plates are made from cast iron and the handle is made from thick steel.

Except for the trays, you won’t find anything made from plastic which is exactly the reason why some people prefer this type of design

You can still drop them from serious heights (not really recommended) and won’t have to worry about anything breaking down.

You don’t have to be extremely careful when leaving them on the floor because they can withstand a lot of beating.

But that doesn’t mean you can trow them from 6 feet and expect nothing…

The adjustability on this type of dumbbell is fairly easy – they can be mounted and dismounted quite easily by hand similarly to mine.

The main downside of this method is that it takes more time than some of the other types of adjustability.

The design is nicely compacted, well balanced and brings the same feeling as you are using the regular gym static weights. (but the cool part is that you don’t have to pay the monthly membership)

Every part from these dumbbells has good protection against rust and they look awesome.

No more chipping and annoying rust…

Finally, I want to mention that the handles are well textured and use additional rubber on both sides for noise and scratch protection.

You can also find the same rubber on both collars that come in the package.

Quick Summary:

Simple doesn’t mean bad.

In my opinion these Ringstar dumbbells are one amazing option for anyone really into the P90X program or just want to workout at home.

These weights are rock-solid, reasonably priced and made to last. The plates could be used with other equipment and you also get a nice tray for better storage.

I believe this set has everything you really need from this type of equipment.

11 Important Features You Should Know Before You Buy the Best Adjustable Dumbbells for P90X

I want to tell you upfront not to skip this part of the article because all this information here is for your own good.

In our society knowledge is power so take the time to inform yourself before you make the final decision.

Below you are going to find what features are important and why it’s recommended you check them in every product you like.

Lastly, I want to add that all 5 products reviewed above fit all or the majority of requirements listed below.

That way we have skipped all the guesswork and had provided you right with the good stuff.

1. How much weight are you going to need?

I want to tell you that I can’t simply give you a number and call it done because it isn’t such a simple thing to do.

That number is something you have to find out for yourself because we are all different from one another.

We have individual strength, explosive power, endurance, condition, etc.

If you have some experience and know what are you capable of my recommendation is to go for a heavier set than you need.

If you doing all the necessary steps in time you will eventually become bigger and stronger and with that, you are going to need more resistance aka weight.

Example: If you feel comfortable using a 50 lbs set go for the 100 lbs.

If you are a total beginner and don’t have a clue where to start then I would suggest going for something in the middle.

I’m talking about something in the range of 50 lbs is going to be enough.

One of my first sets was about 45 pounds and it was enough for quite a lot of time. If you believe you will eventually overgrow it then either go for a heavier option (it’s going to cost more money) or buy a set in which you have the option to later buy additional plates to add more resistance.

It’s your lucky day because we have 2 of this type right above.

I want to emphasize the fact that weight is directly attached to the price and the heavier weight you are going after, the higher the price you are going to pay.

That’s why if you are on a budget is very important to pick the right weight for you.

Within your p90x workouts, you are going to do a lot of different exercises requiring you to have a lot of different weights to accommodate them.

For example, if a certain exercise requires you to use a bigger and stronger muscle group or a lot of muscle groups together you might need to get adjustable dumbbells that can offer a lot of weight.

Others might be less demanding and sort of isolation exercises for which you might not need too much weight.

So the golden rule here is to have an extra amount of weight so you can easily do any exercise you want. As an additional plus, you are making sure that you can continue progressing in the future.

2. How fast and difficult is it to adjust the weight?

I find this to be the next most important feature right after the weight. I find this to be true because this short but important process is what you are going to be doing constantly.

No matter the type of training you want to have something easy, smooth and fast.

You want a simple process you don’t need to overthink and master.

Also make sure the equipment used in adjusting the weight (pins, rotatable mechanisms, collars, etc.) is very durable and it could easily withstand thousands of uses without any issues.

A good way you can do this is to check the type of materials they are built with and what do previous owners think about them.

As you have seen from the products reviewed here there is a lot of different weight adjustment systems. We are talking about the traditional place and slide collar system, turning a dial, twisting the handle, sliding a pin to lock the weight, etc.

Each one does it have it’s own pros and cons so go for the one you feel most comfortable using.

If you do a lot of supersets or have really short rests then you want to be able to change the weight quickly. If that’s the case I would recommend going for something more innovative because these types of adjustment systems are usually the fastest.

From personal experience, I can tell you how annoying it can be to learn that you have added the wrong sized plate using the manual adjustment method and have to repeat everything again.

Unfortunately, something similar can happen to almost every system so always be careful and check your weight before you start doing the exercise.

3. How big are the weight increments?

This isn’t a crucial feature but it is somewhat important. Usually, go for the product that offers the smallest increments because that way you are going to be able to train with different types of resistances.

The 3 most common weight increments are 2.5 pounds, 5 pounds, and 10 pounds.

If you want to get the best out the set go for a 2.5 pounds version.

If you like a model that doesn’t offer 2.5 pounds don’t worry. Going after a 5-pound increment is still a pretty good choice.

At the end of the day go for a number that fits your needs and type of training and progression. There is no right or wrong here.

4. The size and shape of the adjustable dumbbells

As you have probably already seen there are quite different designs than the traditional cast dumbbells.

Depending on the brand they can be longer, bulkier and may even have a rectangle shape.

Bigger and bulkier size can sometimes be a bad thing because it results in poor user stability and control over the weight.

That’s especially true if the model is poorly balanced.

That’s why you shouldn’t skip on the info about the product dimension because they could be really important for your proper p90x movements.

If you have very limited space in your home I would recommend you take a closer look at the size and buy something more compact and portable.

I find that PowerBlock GF-SPDBLK24 to be the smallest model so feel free to check it out for more info.

5. How well are they made

I know that you most likely believe that every set is made to last but that’s not the case. Unfortunately, there are weak and poorly made products which you have to watch for and here’s how to do it.

Firstly take a closer look at the type of materials being used. Try to find that information on the product page or take a closer look at the photos to see.

The best way to do it is to simply ask somebody you know who owns them but most of us won’t have such opportunities.

You want to see that the dumbbells are mainly made from durable materials such as steel, chrome or cast iron.

These are the top 3 most durable and solid materials. Having such great materials in a combination with strong welds and connections is what will make a set nearly indestructible.

Another thing you should check is the outer layer. You want to have a decent protective layer against rust, oxidation, and scratches.

Also, make sure it’s well made and it’s not going to chip off after a few weeks of use.

Finally, our last tip is to stay away from products that have excess amounts of plastic and other non-durable materials.

The main reason is that they can break after a certain period leaving you with a lot of problems and headaches.

6. How well do they absorb shock?

I find shock absorption to be somewhat important for your joints and overall stress. It will also protect you from pain and protect you from damage.

Having extra rubber on the handles and between the plates does help with absorbing shock and making the whole p90x workout more enjoyable.

Having a nicely textured rubber on the handles does have a positive effect with the grip making it more secure and firm.

Not all handles have such layers of protection but that’s not the end of the world.

You can still use a great pair of gloves or wrist wraps to achieve the same thing (and they are not expensive at all).

Finally, you can also see if the adjustable dumbbell set does come with some sort of a shock-absorbent base. Such a thing can be really helpful because it can protect both your floor and the weights themselves.

Quick Tip:

Even if you have such a thing or not try finding a tall object which you can use to place the dumbbells on instead of dropping them to the floor.

A sit up bench, adjustable bench, chair, bed, wooden box or anything high enough would do the job right.

7. Are they portable?

Even if this is not the most important feature I still believe it deserves a place in our article because sooner or later you will face the task to move them from one place to another.

If you are going to move them often you want to have weights that are designed to be disassembled and transported easily.

I have seen some companies offer cool carrying briefcases for easy storage and portability.

So before you order a pair make sure to see if your model does have such a thing. It’s going to be super useful if you find yourself to own one of those.

If you find such a feature important to have you can check the #1 product from our list – the CAP Set. Their 40 lbs set do come with such a case.

Finally, if you are going to carry them around quite often it’s going to be more convenient for you to go for a smaller and lighter design.

8. Length, thickness, and type of handle

I know this feature maybe sound like too much detail but it’s actually pretty important. If you are reading this then you are most likely going to hold the weights quite often for long periods.

If that’s the case you certainly want to have a comfortable and strong grip so you can focus on the more important stuff – the movements themselves.

Some of us have big hands while others don’t so make sure you are going to have enough holding surface so you can do your p90x workouts comfortably.

You can check the length of the handle in order to do so.

When it comes to the handle thickness I would recommend you to go for something of regular diameter.

I’m pretty aware that some models do have extremely thick handles. If that’s your case a set of straps or gloves with straps are going to be very useful.

You want to get something that is not too thick or too thin in order to provide you with enough gripping power so you can finish your p90x / p90x3 workouts.

Mentioning gripping power does lead me to this final and very important information about the texture of the handle.

You want to have nicely textured, non-slip gripping surface you are going to find comfortable holding for a long period.

Anything below that is going to result in a slippery and bad experience you won’t enjoy.

9. How much does it cost?

I want to tell you upfront that buying the best adjustable dumbbells for p90x or any other type of training will require some sort of a budget.

This isn’t the cheapest home gym equipment but it’s one of the essentials every person who is pretty serious about training should own.

In our top 5 list, we made sure to give you a range of differently priced sets so you can buy what you feel comfortable.

So despite the size of your budget you still have a great choice amongst good products.

Whatever model you go for make sure it’s made from solid materials that can last. Also, make sure the set also comes with a reasonable price because adjustable dumbbells are long term equipment that could last decades with proper care.

Finally, I want to mention that you don’t need to spend a fortune to be able to train properly.

I believe that’s the main reason why such products exist in the first place. Their goal is to add convenience and save you money from buying a whole rack and 15 different sets.

10. Additional accessories?

As I mentioned earlier some models do come with extra accessories such as carry cases, custom dumbbell stand or a base that is used to change the weights when needed, etc.

All those things are counted as additional accessories and do add value for the price you are paying so it’s always a good thing to have such good extras.

Even if they are not really essential for success I believe it’s a good thing to have something like this. So take a look at what extras are you getting for the price you are paying and is it really worth it.

Usually, the higher price does come with more extras that add convenience.

11. Should you care about brands?

I’m very aware that there are huge world-known brands that are dominating the market for many years but does that really mean higher quality?

In most cases, yes, but that doesn’t mean you should run away from smaller or unknown brands.

If you really like a product sold by a not familiar company I highly recommend you to do some short online research and find out some basic information about the brand.

We are talking about things such as:

  • How long are they on the market?
  • What do previous customers think about them?
  • what other products are they offering?
  • and more similar questions

After you have found such information you are going to have a realistic look at the company and if it’s worth buying from them.

The good news is that you shouldn’t worry about such things with our products.

All 5 items from our list and made from good brands that stand behind their items with proper warranties and guarantees.

5 Great Benefits of Using Adjustable Dumbbells for P90X

Here is a short but useful list of the best benefits you will be getting if you decide to purchase a set of weights for your home.

#1 – They save you money

Buying a set of adjustable dumbbells a lot cheaper than buying separate fixed sets of different weights. With 1 set of the adjustable option, you can have between 15 – 30 different weights you can use for various exercises.

#2 – They take less space

This type of equipment is a great option for people who have a limited amount of space for working out. Some models have extremely compact designs making them very versatile and space-efficient.

#3 – They help with progressive overload

There are brands that offer adjustable weights with very small weight increments. We are talking about 2.5 lbs increment which is smaller than what the traditional gym dumbbells use.

That small increments can be very handy for an important process called progressive overload which is going to help you build more muscle and become stronger and faster at the same time.

#4 – The save you time

Some models are designed to change the weight only in a few seconds making them a great time saver for certain p90x exercises. That is going to result in shorter and more efficient workouts.

#5 – They can be quite portable

Because you are using only one set you can easily disassemble it, put it on the back on the truck and move it with easy one place another. So whenever you go you can always take them with you.

Final Thoughts

Well, I believe I have shared with you everything I know about adjustable dumbbells and what should you know before you get yourself a nice pair.

And remember this:

At the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter if you are going to use them for P90x or not.

Owning a heavy set of weights can be useful for almost every type of training you can think of.

But if, for any reason, you still haven’t decided which brand or product to go for, don’t panic.

I know that so much information can be a little overwhelming for anybody new so I want to make things easy for you.

I 100% believe that if you decide to check out and eventually purchase my personal favourite set of dubbells I own (the Bowflex SelectTech 552) you will be really happy.
